An early departure from our hotel this morning takes us to the Port of Tropea and to meet our guide for a full day boat trip to the Aeolian Islands of Stromboli, Lipari, and Vulcano.
Lying just off the coast of the Calabrian mainland, the seven volcanic islands that combine the Aeolian Islands are said to be named after Aeolus, the mythical ruler of the winds. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, they are one of Italy's most beautiful natural wonders.
We sail first for Stromboli where we discover the traditional village of San Vincenzo, full of white houses and Aeolian architecture. Enjoy your free time with the chance to walk along charming streets, admire Mount Stromboli, or go swimming at the seafront's black sand beaches.
We then a cruise to Lipari, the largest of the islands with so much to discover: sightseeing at the Acropolis and Lipari Cathedral or listen to the peaceful sounds of the ocean at Marina Corta and Marina Lunga.
Then it’s a short boat trip south to the island of Vulcano, said to be the mythological home of the Greek God of blacksmiths, Hephaestus, or the Roman God Vulcano, hence the island's name, from which name we get the word 'Volcano'.
On Vulcano we can admire the jets of steam from the volcano, and trek along the volcanic trail to be amazed by the views from the crater (subject to local conditions and minimum mobility requirerements)
On our cruise back to Tropea, watch out for the many dolphins sighted in the area.
